While the game of poker has its very own distinct language there are a few terms which you might need to learn for the future to make more sense of what people are taking about. These include :-

Action Card

A card which is dealt to the table and seems to instigate a fair amount of betting action – probably useful to two or more players in the game.

All In

This is the term used when you use up the last of your chips and go “all in” on the hand.

Big Bet Game

These are poker games where there are no limits on that mount of money which can be staked on each game – often the most thrilling and volatile of games with big bucks at stake!

Broadway

This is a ten to ace straight – very powerful in many situations.

Check

To bet nothing on a hand and effectively wait to see what your opponents do. It can be a useful technique to draw in more players and a larger prize pot if you have a good hand. Often by “checking” others will think you have a weak hand.

Laydown

This is one of the more difficult decisions in poker, to laydown and fold on a good hand because you think that someone else around the table has a better hand.

Position Bet

This is where a player will place more money into the pot based on their own position (around the table and in the game) rather than the strength of their hand. This can be a useful tactic to crush an opponent who has little funds left.

Poker Face

Having a good “poker face” is vital if you are ever going to win at the game. If you show any emotion when your cards are drawn you risk giving your competitors an idea of what you may have. Keep a straight face at all times!
