Are online casinos recession-proof?

There are signs that the hangover of the global economic crisis may finally be starting to lift for the nation’’s online casinos, as PartyPoker announced a revenue boost.

PartyPoker made more money from its casino division in the second quarter of the year than the first, despite the seasonal drop-off expected during the summer.

But the firm said by offering more games on its PartyCasino website, such as roulette, slots and blackjack, it has managed to weather the financial storm with a "robust" performance.

It also recently launched a new ”genius” poker promotion, which will see it square the pots of every 50,000th hand played.

PartyPoker’’s chief executive officer Jim Ryan said: "PartyCasino, the world’’s largest online casino, continues to go from strength to strength, with strong double digit growth quarter-on-quarter despite difficult economic conditions.

"We look forward to the rest of the year with confidence."

So with PartyPoker now on track to make as much money this year as it did in 2008, are online casinos recession-proof? Or is it all just a game of chance?
