Missouri casinos report 4% profit lift

08.14.2009 | 11:22 am | Casino.co.uk

While Las Vegas and Atlantic City may still be feeling the heat of the global economic crisis, it seems casinos in Missouri are keeping a cool head.

The Missouri Gaming Commission has reported that revenues at the city’’s gaming venues were up four per cent in July compared to the same month last year.

Casinos in Missouri were also succeeding in getting more punters through the doors during the month, with footfall up on last year’’s numbers at seven out of 12 venues.

Gene McNary, state gaming commission executive director, told Forbes that during an economic crisis, people are more inclined to stay closer to home than travel to expensive destinations like Vegas.

"We are regionally and centrally located and people found it less costly and more convenient to come to us," he added.

It was recently reported that Las Vegas Strip gambling revenues slumped 15 per cent in June, indicating that unlike Missouri, the gambling capital of the world is still feeling the squeeze.

Las Vegas casinos feeling the credit crunch squeeze

08.13.2009 | 10:58 am | Casino.co.uk

Though there have been some signs of an improving economic picture of late, the gambling capital of the world is still suffering from the effects of the credit crunch.

Las Vegas Strip gambling revenues slumped 15 per cent in June – more than double the rate of decline for May as the recession continues to take its toll on the city.

According to Nevada’’s Gaming Control Board’’s website, casino proceeds fell to $414.5 (£249 million) during the month.

One of the problems causing the decline is a lack of tourists visiting Nevada to spend their gambling dollars.

Around 18 million people visited the city in June according to the Las Vegas Convention & Visitors Authority, which was 6.8 per cent lower than the same month in 2008.

There is a bright side for tourists during all this doom and gloom, however, as the Daily Mail recently reported that many of Vegas” are introducing special offers and bargain deals to pull in the punters.

Online bingo sales ”to hit $1.6bn”

08.12.2009 | 9:10 am | Casino.co.uk

Online bingo operators will see a boom in sales next year, bucking the trend of many other gambling outlets during the recession.

According to data from H2 Gambling Capital, revenue from online bingo is expected to grow by 20 per cent hitting $1.3 billion (£790 million) by the end of this year, growing to $1.6 billion in 2010, reports Bloomberg.

Simon Holliday, director of H2, told the news provider that the online version of bingo has been more resilient than other kinds of gaming and it is the "least mature" area of internet gambling

He said: "Online bingo is in such an early growth phase that any recessionary impacts are outweighed by its newness,"

"This is often supply driven demand. It relates to availability and how heavily things are marketed."

The success of online bingo has also marched on despite the increase in tax on the game from 15 to 22 per cent earlier this year.
